Personalized Learning

There have been many discussions about how to personalize learning for Canadian students. This is a difficult concept to grasp, especially in educational systems with an assessment focus. Recently, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (2010) reported the results of the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Canada again ranked as one of the top performers in reading literacy, mathematics, science and educational equity. Finland was, and has been, a top performer, quite consistently, in the PISA results.

Here is a blog by Mary Forte Hayes for ASCD on how Finland manages personalized learning. Of interest is the information the involvement of parents for teaching religions. As well, Finland's teachers have autonomy in teaching the curriculum and assessment.
